Modern photography has consisted predominately of black and white silver prints, however the original foundations of photography incorporated numerous printing out techniques before the popularization of the silver print, such as alternative process photography. An alternative process photograph is one that uses techniques that are atypical of straight film process photography within a single image; for instance, paint, dye, or a silk background, in order to heighten the expressive or aesthetic possibilities of the artist.
